As a daughter of a Chinese Culinary Chef, Judy Lai recalls assisting her grandmother and her parent’s with making traditional Chinese savory and sweet dishes. Years later, Judy, the creator of Silk Cakes, is stirring up her own pastry concoctions with a blend of Asian, American, and French influences.Judy’s artistic interests led her to pursue a study of studio fine arts at SUNY Binghamton. Soon after graduating and while working at Sony Music, she expanded her skills by attaining a certificate degree in Pastry and Baking Arts at the Institute of Culinary Education, a certificate in Cake Decorating at The New School, and a Grand Diploma in Classic Pastry Arts at the French Culinary Institute. While holding a job at Sony Music, she was asked to bake specialty cakes for various occasions for colleagues, friends, and family members. Eventually, Judy had many cake commissions and knew she had found her true calling.
